WESTMINSTER WATER TREATMENT PLANT

WESTMINSTER, COLORADO

45 ACRES

CLIENT: City of Westminster

COLLABORATORS: CDM Smith, Avocet Irrigation

STATUS: In Progress

Sage Design Group provided landscape architecture services for the exterior planting design of a wastewater treatment facility, working closely with multiple City departments to develop a coordinated and practical solution that met both technical and aesthetic goals. Through this collaborative process, the team helped integrate the landscape design with the facility’s operational requirements while supporting long-term maintainability and environmental performance.

The facility includes advanced ozonation treatment, a highly effective process directed by City Council to help eliminate bacteria, viruses, and reduce potential impacts from upstream wildfire events within the Clear Creek Watershed. In response, the landscape design was carefully developed to complement this level of infrastructure while maintaining a strong focus on resilience and efficiency.

Reflecting the City of Westminster’s ongoing commitment to water conservation and reduced consumption since 2000, the project was also “right-sized” to match current and future community needs. Sage Design Group responded with a low-water-use, native and adaptive planting palette that provides functional screening, stabilizes the site, and softens the industrial character of the facility. The result is a cohesive landscape solution that integrates infrastructure, ecology, and community values through thoughtful design and interdepartmental collaboration.
